In the mid 23rd Century, the Earth Alliance space station Babylon 5, located in neutral territory, is a major focal point for political intrigue, racial tensions and various wars over the course of five years. I used to be a hardcore Star Trek fan, and the idea of another Sci-fi series being better was offensive. I was so bigotted in the matter that I wouldn&#39;t even consider watching it. I took one look at B5 and thought &#39;DS9 ripoff&#39;.<br/><br/>But I was so wrong. I ignored the first season and the majority of the second but then one day something caught my attention. It was a speech from a character whose home planet had been devestated by war. I continued watching throughout the third season and began to like the characters. I nearly wet my pants in surprise at the season finale. I continued to watch the fourth season and by the end it was the only T.V show that mattered to me.<br/><br/>Star Trek drifted off into the abyssVoyager began to grow increasingly annoying to me. And the final episode of DS9 seemed to almost be a ripoff of B5. The series has an overall story arc which lasts for five years. In those 5 years we witness at least 6 wars, and you feel pain and joy for the characters. Star Trek tries but fails in that department. It has probably been the best 5 seasons on T.V and I was sad to see it go. And to all you Star Trek fans reading, give it a shot, you might be surprised. B5 is a one of a kind sci-fi series. The plot lines and character developement exhibit a scope and sequence unparalleled in modern television. Few series aremulti-leveledthis one. Stand alone stories grab an occasional viewer&#39;s attention. Combine that with the overall perpetuation of a five season story line presented in serial format to keep the loyal viewers coming back week after week. Mix in social commentary of an imperfect future to remind us of the imperfect present and you get great sci-fi t.v. Overall, great character development, terrific blending of free-standing/serial episode format, and great subject material makes Babylon 5 highly addictive and has created a fanatical following. Try this one if you appreciate good science fiction television and you might become a B5 nut.
