a5c7b9f00b In the near future, Russian rebels have taken over one of the ICBM bases in the USSR. Alarmed by the prospect of a rebel strike, the U.S. sends the U.S.S. Alabama, a nuclear ballistic submarine, to watch over the base and retaliate in case they launch. While on patrol, the submarine is attacked and the radio systems are knocked out, but after first receiving an emergency message from HQ to launch nuclear missiles at the rebels. A second emergency message received during the battle is only partially recovered. Captain Ramsey decides to carry out the first order to launch the missiles regardless while XO Hunter wants to wait for a successful receipt of the second message once the radio systems are repaired. The conflict escalates into mutiny as Ramsey and Hunter fight for control of the Alabama's nuclear missiles.
When some Russian rebels takes control of some ICBM's, the Americans mobilize. Among the vessels sent is the nuclear sub, the Alabama. But before they leave they need a new X.O. and among the choices is Commander Hunter, who hasn't seen much action. But the ship's Captain, Ramsey OK's him. While on the way, there was an incident and Hunter disagreed with how Ramsey handled it, it's evident that Ramsey doesn't think much of Hunter because Hunter was college educated while Ramsey worked his way up. They're given orders to attack but when they were in the process of receiving another order, the ship's communications were damaged, so the entire message was not received. Ramsey decides to continue with their previous order while Hunter wants to reestablish contact first. That's when the two men butt heads that ends with Hunter relieving Ramsey. Later when some men die, some of the officers feel that Hunter is not up to the task so they team up to retake control. But Hunter has taken precautions.
Enjoyable, good tension, good dilemma, good cast. But:<br/><br/>You have a movie like this where either Washington&#39;s or Hackman&#39;s character side could be right about their course of action. The aim of the movie, ostensibly, is to present both sides and let the viewer figure out which is the correct course.<br/><br/>But you can&#39;t possibly side with Hackman, can you?<br/><br/>After all, his character goes nuts when everything starts happening. His character is possibly racist. And his character is prepared to launch nukes. Washington&#39;s character is, quite nobly, none of those things.<br/><br/>Ho hum. Hollywood audience manipulation at its finest.<br/><br/>Would it kill these writers and producers to present a dilemma movie in an intelligent fashion for once? I&#39;d like to struggle with &quot;who&#39;s right and who&#39;s wrong?&quot; just once in my moviegoing life.
Submarine movies are about two environments. There is the underwater world and then there is the interior of the sub. Between those two areas is the story set. I rank the typical mainstream sub movies from least to greatest as such: &#39;K-19&#39;,&#39;U-571&#39;, &#39;Crimson Tide&#39;, &#39;Red October&#39;, &#39;Run Silent Run Deep&#39;, &#39;Das Boot&#39;, and &#39;The Abyss&#39;.<br/><br/>&#39;Das Boot&#39; has the best use of interiors. The camera is made servant to the surroundings and sound is used to augment the mood unlike the cacophonous American releases of the 90s and 2000s.<br/><br/>&#39;Abyss&#39; goes one step further with probably the best underwater photography ever shot. The mix of colors from blue to purple to black is astounding.<br/><br/>Here we have a typical Scott film, no smarter than &#39;Top Gun&#39;, &#39;BHC 2&#39;, or &#39;Days of Thunder&#39; and nowhere on par with its superiors. Denzel takes a break from Zwick (a relief) with Hackman, but neither one goes to any new level. It&#39;s all stuff we&#39;ve seen before.<br/><br/>Overall, &#39;Fail-Safe&#39; with &#39;Caine Mutiny&#39;, and &#39;Top Gun&#39; thrown in with no purpose.<br/><br/>Final Analysis = = Cinematic Dud
Oddly enough, Crimson Tide develops into an actors' picture, not just an action movie. There are a lot of special effects, high-tech gadgets and violent standoffs, yes, but the movie is really a battle between two wills.
The Unrated Extended Version runs more than 6 minutes longer than the theatrical version. It extends the story in many scenes.
